## The short version

WatchieBesti reads the wearer's steps, active energy, heart rate, resting heart rate, and workout history from their Apple Watch to make the pet respond to real activity.
That data never leaves the device. We don't collect it, store it, or send it anywhere.

## What we read (and why)

### The wearer's daily steps

Steps are the main way the app knows the wearer is active. They're compared against a daily goal.
More steps means a happier pet.

Example: if the wearer walks 4,000 steps, the pet is content. At 6,000 or more, the pet is happy and bouncing.

### Active energy

Active energy (calories burned through movement) adds another layer beyond steps. It helps the app understand
workout intensity (a run counts differently from a walk).

Example: 30 minutes of running generates more active energy than 30 minutes of walking, and the pet responds accordingly.

### Current heart rate

Heart rate tells the app how hard the wearer is working (not just that they moved, but that they were working hard).
Running gives a bigger happiness boost than strolling.

Example: a wearer who runs for 20 minutes gets a bigger pet boost than one who walks the same number of steps.

### Resting heart rate

A reference number so the app can tell the difference between resting and active heart rates.
Read once, not constantly monitored.

Used behind the scenes — never shown to the wearer.

### Workout history

The app checks recent workouts to understand the wearer's activity pattern. A completed workout
gives the pet a meaningful boost.

Example: if you log a 30-minute outdoor run with the Workout app, the pet picks up on that effort and responds the next time you check in.

### Sleep schedule

The pet sleeps based on a configurable bedtime and wake time set in the app. No HealthKit sleep data is used.

Example: if bedtime is set to 8pm and wake time to 7am, the pet will be sleeping during those hours. This is set in the app — no HealthKit permission needed.

Planned for future versions

- **Optional iCloud sync**. If you choose to enable it, the wearer's pet data (growth stage and progress) will sync across their devices via their private iCloud account. This is opt-in, governed by Apple's privacy policy, and never accessible to us.

This feature is not in the app yet. This page will be updated when it ships.

## What we don't do

- ✕ **We never send health data to a server.** The app works entirely offline. There is no backend, no cloud database, no "syncing to our servers."
- ✕ **We never sell or share data.** With anyone. For any reason.
- ✕ **We never show raw health numbers to the wearer.** No step counts on screen, no heart rate graphs, no calorie displays. The wearer sees a pet, not a dashboard.
- ✕ **We never collect personal information.** No name, no email, no account, no login. The app works immediately out of the box.
- ✕ **We have no analytics or tracking.** No Google Analytics, no Mixpanel, no Firebase, no advertising SDKs. This website doesn't track you either.
- ✕ **We have no ads.** Not now, not ever. WatchieBesti is free — it never shows ads.
- ✕ **We have no social features.** No chat, no profiles, no friend lists, no leaderboards.

## Where data lives

All health data stays in two places, both on the wearer's device:

1. 01 **Apple HealthKit** Apple's built-in health database on the watch. We read from it. We never write to it.
2. 02 **The app's local storage** The app saves a daily "activity score" (a single number, not raw health data) so the pet remembers how yesterday went. This is stored on-device and deleted when you uninstall the app.

If the wearer has an iPhone paired with their watch, the pet's mood (not raw health data) syncs between watch and phone
using Apple's built-in device-to-device communication. This does not go through the internet.

## Permission is always optional

When the app first opens, it asks for permission to read health data. The wearer can say no to any or all of these.
The pet still works — it just won't respond to real activity. You can change these permissions at any time in the
Apple Watch Settings app under **Privacy & Security → Health**.

## How to delete everything

Uninstall the app. That's it. All pet data and activity scores are deleted.
We have nothing on our end to delete because we never had it.

## What we collect on this site

Nothing. No cookies are set. No tracking pixels. No fingerprinting.

We do not collect your name, email address, location, device ID, or browsing behaviour.

## What the app collects

The WatchieBesti app reads step count, active energy, heart rate, resting heart rate, and workout history from HealthKit on the wearer's device.
The pet's sleep mood is based on a user-configurable sleep schedule (bedtime and wake time), not HealthKit sleep data.
This data **never leaves the device**. It is not sent to any server and is not accessible to us.
All locally stored data is permanently deleted when the app is uninstalled.
The app does not use an advertising identifier (IDFA).

**iCloud sync:** WatchieBesti uses iCloud to sync your pet's data across your Apple devices. This data is stored in your personal iCloud account and is subject to
[Apple's Privacy Policy](https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/).
Apple acts as a data processor on your behalf. You can disable iCloud sync at any time in your device's Settings under your Apple Account.

## Third parties

This website is hosted by [Cloudflare](https://www.cloudflare.com/privacypolicy/)
(Cloudflare Pages). Cloudflare processes requests as part of delivering the site.
The app also uses [Apple iCloud](https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/)
to sync pet data between your devices. Apple processes this data as a data processor on your behalf, governed by Apple's Privacy Policy.
No other third parties have access to your data.

We use Cloudflare Web Analytics for anonymous, cookie-free traffic insights. This service does not
use cookies, does not fingerprint browsers, and is COPPA-compliant.

## How to earn one

Win any of the [9 Brain Boost mini-games](/brain-boost/) and your besti earns a Brain Burst. You can play any game, any time, but you only earn a new Brain Burst if your pet doesn't already have one active. Keep playing while one's already glowing and it's just for fun; no second Burst until it clears.

Of the three Burst types, Brain Burst is the smallest single boost. But games are quick, and there are nine of them to pick from.

## Earning Sparks

Every [Burst](/bursts/) gives you a choice: feed it to your pet for growth, or convert it to Sparks. Converting is a deliberate tap in the Spark Stash's Wallet tab. Nothing converts automatically. Each Burst type converts at its own rate:

Brain Bursts earned from playing games cap out at 10 per day toward your Spark balance. Grinding games past that doesn't add more. New players get a 150-Spark welcome gift on first launch, enough to buy one wand outright. The Store opens straight to a wand matched to your besti's kingdom (or the Magician's Wand if you haven't picked one yet).

## Spending Sparks

Two kinds of cosmetic extra, bought with Sparks in the Store tab:

World Effects: 240 ✨ each
Emoji Rain 🎊 and Rainbow Weather 🌈, full-screen particle effects layered over your pet. Only one can be active at a time, and each has a 3-day cooldown before you can trigger it again.

Wands: 140 ✨ each
7 hand-equipped wands, each with its own tap effect: Magician's 🎭, Animal 🐰, Machine ⚙️, Plant 🌱, Sports 🏈, Fairy 🧚, and Heart 💖. One-time purchase per wand. Once owned, swap freely between any you've bought, no cooldown.

## Buying more Sparks

Don't want to wait? Sparks can also be bought directly with real money: Handful (150 Sparks), Bundle (450 Sparks), or Treasure (1000 Sparks).

Every real-money purchase is gated behind a parental check: turn the Digital Crown to line up the correct answer to a simple multiplication problem before the purchase goes through. No stored card details, no one-tap buys a curious kid could trigger by accident.

The screen scrolls automatically. Tap to jump over a hill or across a hole: tap again in mid-air for a double jump where one's available.

## Scoring & strategy

You start with a few life pips: hitting an obstacle costs one, plus a short pause with brief invincibility. Survive until the round's timer runs out to win.

Easy gives you three pips and 30 seconds; Hard gives just one pip, 60 seconds, and a scroll speed that keeps shifting under you.

## How to play

Turn the Digital Crown to slide the paddle and launch the ball — it bounces off walls, the paddle, and bricks until every breakable brick is gone.

## Scoring & strategy

Break a **Pet Block** brick for a bonus and a random power-up — an extra ball in play, or a wider paddle. Miss the ball with the paddle and you lose a life, unless another ball is still in play.

**Full mode** plays the whole board. **Quick mode** trims every brick's hit count for a shorter round — good for a fast round between activities.

## How to play

Drag your finger along the numbered dots, in order — a loupe follows your touch so you can see past your fingertip. Trace closely enough and the shape reveals the sprite underneath.

## Scoring & strategy

Each shape has its own timer — 20 seconds on Easy, down to 15 on Hard, where you'll also trace more shapes per round, up to three. Missing the timer on any shape ends the round.

You don't need pixel-perfect tracing — cover enough of the outline and it locks in, revealing a random pet sprite underneath. Stray too far and it's a mistake: the trace resets and the timer keeps running.

## How to play

A grid of tiles appears where every tile matches except one. Tap the odd one out. What changes (species, mood, or coat colour) depends on difficulty: species on Easy, mood on Medium, coat colour on Hard.

## Scoring & strategy

You get a small number of wrong taps before the round ends: two on Easy and Medium, just one on Hard. Higher difficulty also adds more rounds and more tiles per grid, growing from 4 tiles on Easy up to 9 on Hard.

## How to play

Tap a tile to flip it, then tap a second one. Match, and both stay revealed; miss, and they flip back so you can try again.

## Scoring & strategy

You have a limited number of turns to find every pair — eight on Easy and Medium, ten on Hard. Hard also adds an extra pair to find and a decoy tile that can never be matched.

Turns remaining show as dots above the grid — they glow when you're down to your last one, so keep an eye on the board, not just your own taps.

## How to play

Tap a tile to reveal it: empty tiles open up their neighbours automatically. Long-press a tile to flag a suspected flame. Your very first tap is always guaranteed safe.

Arm the radar tool from the toolbar, tap a tile to centre a scan, then turn the Digital Crown to sweep it and reveal nearby verdicts.

## Scoring & strategy

One wrong tap on a flame ends the round immediately: there's no mistake buffer. The board and flame count both grow with difficulty, from a 4×4 grid with 2 flames on Easy up to 8×5 with 10 flames on Hard, and on Hard the radar only tells you an adjacent-flame count instead of a direct flame-or-safe verdict.

The radar has its own charge meter: it starts with one charge and earns another every six safe tiles you reveal.

## How to play

Each round opens with the target sprite shown alone for a moment — no tapping yet. Then the full board reveals, tile by tile: every tile stays visible at once, each sitting on its own random mood-coloured background. Almost every tile shows the same sprite; tap the one that's actually different before the timer runs out. On Easy, that tile gives itself away with a small wiggle as it reveals.

## Scoring & strategy

Each wrong tap or missed timer counts against you: two chances on Easy and Medium, one on Hard. Later rounds and higher difficulty add more tiles and shrink every timer.

The board grows from 4 tiles on Easy up to 9 on Hard, while the preview window shrinks from 3 seconds down to 1, and the recall window from 4 seconds down to 2.2: less time to look, less time to remember.

## How to play

A few sprites light up in order — watch closely, then tap the tiles back in the same sequence. Get it wrong and a Replay pattern button lets you watch it again at double speed.

## Scoring & strategy

You're allowed a few mistakes before the round ends — three on Easy and Medium, two on Hard. Higher difficulty also means a longer sequence, more tiles on the board, and a faster pattern to track.

## How to play

Tap the left half of the screen to turn left, the right half to turn right — your squiggle keeps moving on its own. Steer it onto green and yellow pills to grow longer and rack up length; red pills shrink you back down (or end the round outright on Hard). Reach the target length before you run into a wall, an obstacle, or your own tail.

## Scoring & strategy

Target length climbs with difficulty — 10 on Easy, 15 on Medium, 20 on Hard. Easy wraps around every edge, so there's no wall to fear. Medium adds lethal top and bottom walls while the sides still wrap, and eating pills speeds you up. Hard walls off all four sides (with a couple of gaps to slip through), spawns obstacles over time, and speeds up automatically the longer you survive.

Watch the length counter in the corner — it tracks your progress against the round's target. Your best length per difficulty is saved and shown on the ready screen, so beating your own record is the real long game.

## What are achievements?

Achievements are badges you earn by playing and raising bestis. They celebrate milestones: your first hatch, your first ecstatic mood, your longest [active day](/guides/active-day/) streak, working out with your besti, and more.

## How to view them

On iPhone, tap the trophy button on the WatchieBesti home screen. On your Apple Watch, open the Info screen and tap the trophy. Locked achievements show a hint so you know what to work toward next.

## Collection tiers

[Kingdom](/#kingdoms-heading) and species collection achievements come in three tiers: bronze for your first, silver for halfway, and gold for completing the set. Graduating more bestis is the only way to climb the tiers. See [WatchieBesti Family](/guides/family/) for where those graduated bestis end up.

# What counts as an active day?

The one measure behind hatching, growing up, and your WatchieBesti Family history.

## The definition

An active day is any day your warmth bar moves: you moved enough, according to your Health data, to make a difference. It's not tied to a single workout: any movement that nudges the bar counts.

## Where it shows up

The same active day counts in four different places across the app:

- [Hatching Speed](/guides/hatching-speed/): an active day is what cracks and hatches your egg. Fast can crack and hatch in as little as two active days; Patient spreads them further apart.
- [Evolution & Growing Up](/guides/evolution/): active days feed your besti's progress bar toward the next of four life stages, alongside feeding Bursts directly.
- [WatchieBesti Family](/guides/family/): tap any graduated besti and their history shows exactly how many active days you shared together.
- [Achievements](/guides/achievements/): the Streak chip tracks your longest run of active days in a row.

## Active days vs. Bursts

An active day is a simple yes/no threshold for the day: did the warmth bar move. [Bursts](/bursts/) are a separate, bigger reward earned from a specific tracked workout, a burst of everyday activity, or winning a Brain Boost game. Each one you feed gives an instant (capped) push to growth, on top of whatever active days already do.

## 11 status styles, 4 widget shapes

Every complication slot on your watch face is one of four shapes — circular, corner, rectangular, or inline — and each one can show any of 11 status styles: mood name, activity %, life stage, days together, pet name, or a combined view mixing two or more of those. There's also a curved progress-arc style that traces your daily activity goal right around the ring, and a rectangular-only "all info" style that adds burst-type counts (workout, activity, brain) alongside the mood pill.

Before your egg hatches, every complication shows the same honest "mystery" placeholder — a cloud and a question mark — rather than guessing at a pet that doesn't exist yet.

## Adding one to your face

Long-press your watch face, tap **Edit**, swipe to the complications screen, and select an empty slot. Choose WatchieBesti from the app list, then pick which status style that slot shows — you can add WatchieBesti to more than one slot at once, each with a different style, if your face has the room.

## Smart Stack

WatchieBesti can also surface itself in the Smart Stack — the scrollable widget list above your watch face — without you adding anything manually. It donates relevance at specific moments rather than sitting there constantly: right when you wake up, as bedtime approaches, when a streak is about to lapse, right after something worth celebrating (a medal, a workout, an achievement, a brain game boost), and when a medal tier is close but not yet earned.

Outside those moments, Smart Stack falls back to whichever complication you've already placed on your face, so it never freezes on a stale card overnight.

# Confused Pet

What to do when your pet shows question marks.

## What it looks like

A confused pet appears sleepy and grey, with question marks floating in their thought bubble. It's a signal that something needs your attention, not a real mood.

## Why it happens

Your pet needs access to your Health data to know how active you've been. If that access is turned off (accidentally or after an iOS update), your pet stops receiving activity data and enters the confused state.

## How to fix it

Open the Settings app, go to Health → Data Access & Devices → WatchieBesti, and make sure all permissions are enabled. Once access is restored, your pet will return to their normal self within a few minutes.

How your besti grows over time.

## Stages

Your besti grows through four stages: egg, baby, young, and adult. Each stage brings a new look and a little more personality. The progress bar on your watch and in the app shows how far along your besti is.

## Hatching

Every besti starts as an egg. When it's ready to hatch, you'll choose which world they come from: [Animals, Plants, or Vehicles](/#kingdoms-heading). The creature inside, and the colour of their coat, are always a surprise. Stay active and your egg will crack open to reveal who's been waiting for you. See [Hatching Speed](/guides/hatching-speed/) for exactly how that timing works.

## Growing up

As you rack up [active days](/guides/active-day/) together, your besti's progress bar fills. When it's full, they move to the next stage. There's no shortcut, just keep moving.

Once hatched, the fastest way to push that bar forward is [feeding a Burst](/bursts/): growth is capped at 10% of the current stage per day, so there's no way to rush a besti straight to adult.

## Your graduated bestis

The WatchieBesti Family section is home to every besti you've ever raised. They're grouped by [kingdom](/#kingdoms-heading) (Animals, Plants, Vehicles) and they stay with you forever. There's no limit to how many you can have.

## Kingdom habitats

Each kingdom has its own habitat card. As you graduate more bestis, the card fills up with species and coat colours you've collected. A progress indicator shows how far through the kingdom you are.

## Pet history

Tap any graduated besti to see their story: when they were born, how many [active days](/guides/active-day/) you shared, which stages they reached (see [Evolution & Growing Up](/guides/evolution/)), and when they graduated. A full record of your time together.

## How it works

Your egg needs [active days](/guides/active-day/) to hatch. An active day is any day the warmth bar moves: you moved enough to make a difference.

## Fast

Your egg can crack the same day you get it. Have an active day and it cracks; have another and it hatches. Hit your full goal on day one and it might crack and hatch in the same session.

## Patient

The clock starts the day after you get your egg. Have an active day and it cracks. Keep going and it hatches: the warmth bar shows your progress.

## Changing speed

Open Settings on your watch, then tap Hatching Speed. Switching between Fast and Patient doesn't reset your egg's progress.

What to do when iCloud sync is paused or storage is full.

## What is iCloud sync?

Your pet's progress is saved to iCloud and stays in sync between your iPhone and Apple Watch. All you need is your Apple ID.

## Pet looks different on Watch vs iPhone

iCloud sync may be catching up. Give it a few minutes; both devices will match once sync completes.

## iCloud storage full: sync paused

Your Apple ID has run out of free iCloud storage. Your pet is safe on this device but won't sync until you free up space.

## Not signed in to iCloud

The app works without iCloud, but your progress won't transfer between devices. Sign in via Settings → [Your Name] on your iPhone.

## Privacy

## What iCloud stores

WatchieBesti uses iCloud to keep your besti, your graduated Family, your achievements, and your settings safe. Everything syncs automatically between your iPhone and Apple Watch as long as both are signed into the same Apple ID.

## New device

Getting a new iPhone or Apple Watch? Sign in with the same Apple ID and your besti will be waiting: no manual export or restore needed. Sync can take a few minutes on a fresh install.

## Privacy

Your data is stored privately in your personal iCloud account. We never see it, and it's never shared with anyone. You can delete everything at any time from [Settings → Danger Zone](/guides/settings/#danger-zone-heading).

If you run into an issue, or want to give feedback, WatchieBesti support is here! We're always keen to learn how to make the WatchieBesti experience better.

Send one combined debug export from your WatchieBesti iPhone app and a short description of what was going on at the time and what you expected vs what happened. Feel free to include screenshots too.

The export will include your WatchieBesti family state, iPhone diagnostics, and Apple Watch debug information. Export requires your watch to be nearby and reachable by the iPhone app.

## Export a support report from iPhone

You do not need to export anything separately from Apple Watch. The iPhone asks the watch for its debug information and packages everything into one file.

Make sure Apple Watch is paired with this iPhone, WatchieBesti is installed on Apple Watch, and both devices are nearby. Opening WatchieBesti on Apple Watch can help if the iPhone says the watch is not reachable.

Answers to common questions about WatchieBesti.

How do I give the app access to health data?

When you first open the app on your Apple Watch, it asks for HealthKit permission. Tap **Allow**. You can change this in **Settings → Privacy → Health** at any time.

Why aren't my steps counting?
▾

Make sure the Apple Watch is worn during activity and that HealthKit permission was granted. Steps are synced when the watch is in range of the iPhone.

I got a new Apple Watch — what happens to my pet?
▾

Your pet is backed up via iCloud. Sign into the same Apple ID on your new watch, install WatchieBesti, and your pet should restore automatically. Give it a moment to sync after first launch.

How do I delete all data?
▾

Uninstalling the app removes all pet data stored on device. HealthKit data is controlled separately in the Health app.

Does the pet get sad if I have a bad day?
▾

The pet has moods, but never a punishing state. The worst case is a calm sleeping animation. There is no "game over" and no shaming language.

My pet disappeared or reset to an egg

This can happen if the app was deleted and reinstalled, or if the watch was unpaired and re-paired. WatchieBesti uses iCloud to back up your pet's data — if you reinstall the app and are signed into the same Apple ID, your pet should restore automatically. If your pet doesn't appear after reinstalling, open the app and wait a moment for iCloud to sync.

The complication shows a code instead of text

This is a display bug when the app updates but the watch hasn't caught up. Force-quit the app on your watch (swipe up from the watch face, swipe the app away), then reopen it. If the complication still shows wrong text, remove it from your watch face and add it again.

How do I choose what kind of pet I get?
▾

When your egg hatches, you pick a kingdom. Inside that kingdom, the species you hatch is a surprise — there are dozens of species in total to discover, and each kingdom feels different.

Can I change my pet's species later?
▾

Your pet stays with the species it hatches as. When it reaches adult and stays engaged for a sustained window, it graduates into your kingdom collection — and a new egg arrives. That's where the variety comes in over time.

What happens when my pet grows up?
▾

Once your pet has been an engaged adult for long enough, it graduates. It joins your permanent kingdom collection — you can browse all your graduated pets in the iPhone companion app. A new egg appears on your watch and the loop starts again.

Can I keep my old pet after a new egg arrives?
▾

Yes. Graduated pets live in your kingdom collection forever. On the watch: swipe left on the pet screen, tap your kingdom, then scroll down to find your graduated pets. On iPhone, the family habitat view shows them all together.

What unlocks achievements?
▾

All sorts of things — your first egg, your first hatch, completing a colour set in a species, hitting daily-streak milestones, and many more. The full list is part of the discovery experience, so we don't spoil it here.

# Getting Started

Everything you need to set up WatchieBesti.

## What you need

- An Apple Watch running watchOS 11 or later
- An iPhone running iOS 18 or later
- WatchieBesti installed on both

## 01 Install the app

Download WatchieBesti from the App Store on your iPhone. The watch app installs automatically — give it a minute to appear on your watch.

## 02 Open the app on your watch

Press the digital crown, find WatchieBesti in your app list, and open it. You'll be greeted by your egg — your pet is still growing inside.

## 03 Grant health permission

WatchieBesti reads your step count, heart rate, and sleep schedule to stay in sync with your day. [Your data stays on your device.](/data/) When prompted, tap **Allow** to grant permission.

If you accidentally tap "Don't Allow", you can fix this in the iPhone Health app: open **Health → your profile picture → Privacy → Apps → WatchieBesti**, and turn on the permissions there.

## 04 Add a complication (optional)

To see your pet at a glance on your watch face, long-press your watch face → tap **Edit** → navigate to the complications slots → select WatchieBesti. Your pet's current mood will show right on your face. See the [Complications guide](/guides/complications/) for all 11 status styles and how Smart Stack works.

## 05 Start moving!

Your egg will hatch once you've built up enough activity over a few days. After that, your pet's mood will change throughout the day based on how active you are. Check in on them regularly.

## After your egg hatches

Move enough over your first day or two and your egg will hatch. Right before it does, you'll be asked to pick a kingdom.

The kingdom is your choice. The species inside is a surprise. Once you pick, your pet appears.

## Reading the mood ring

The ring around your pet shows how its day has gone. Each segment is one slice of time, coloured by the pet's mood at that moment — happy, sleepy, energetic, and so on.

Glance at the ring to spot when your pet was happiest, or when it was sleepy. The full day fills as time passes.

## Set your sleep schedule

Open the WatchieBesti settings on your watch and set your bedtime and wake time. Your pet will sleep during those hours, so notifications stay quiet at night.

## Tips for keeping your pet happy

- A walk counts. You don't need to run — consistent daily movement is what matters most.
- Your pet needs exercise every day, just like you. Keep moving to keep them happy.
- If your pet looks sleepy, try a short walk. Even a few hundred steps will cheer them up.
- Your pet has a name — you can set it in Settings on the watch or in the iPhone companion app.

## iCloud shows "Not available" on my watch

This is a watchOS system issue, not a WatchieBesti problem. It means your watch has temporarily lost its connection to iCloud at the device level.

WatchieBesti stores all your data locally on the watch and iPhone, so this won't affect your pet or your progress. You can ignore it as far as the app is concerned.

To resolve it:

1. 01 On your iPhone, open the **Watch** app.
2. 02 Go to **General → Reset → Reset Sync Data**.
3. 03 Wait a minute, then check your watch — iCloud should reconnect.

If that doesn't work, restart your watch: press and hold the side button, then slide to power off. Power it back on and the connection usually re-establishes itself.

## My pet's mood isn't changing

Your pet updates based on activity data from HealthKit. Check the Health permission is enabled on iPhone and on your watch, give it a few minutes after activity, or check the app's own diagnostics screen for the exact cause.

## The watch app won't open / crashes immediately

Try the following in order:

1. 01 Force-quit the app on the watch and reopen it.
2. 02 Restart your watch (press and hold the side button → slide to power off).

## I picked the wrong kingdom

The kingdom you pick at hatch is locked for that pet — you can't switch mid-life. The good news: it's not forever. When your pet graduates into your collection, a new egg appears, and you pick again.

If you'd rather not raise the current pet at all, you can reset everything in the iPhone app under Settings → Reset all data. Note that this clears your kingdom collection too.

## My pet won't graduate

Graduation requires sustained engagement once your pet reaches adult. That means opening the app, keeping the watch on, and letting health data flow through HealthKit on a regular basis.

If days are going by with no progress, check that HealthKit permissions are still granted (iPhone → Settings → Health → Data Access & Devices → WatchieBesti) and that the watch app has been opened recently. Graduation is not based on raw step count — it's about the pet seeing you regularly over time.

## The mood ring isn't updating

The mood ring fills as the day goes on. Empty segments mean the pet didn't see any data for that slice of time.

Most often this happens because the watch wasn't worn during that window, or HealthKit permissions are missing. Check on iPhone: Settings → Health → Data Access & Devices → WatchieBesti, and confirm Steps and Heart Rate are both turned on.

## My pet's notifications are quiet

That's by design. WatchieBesti only nudges you when your pet actually needs you. When the pet is happy and engaged, engagement notifications are suppressed — no false-alarm "your pet misses you" when it's fine.

If you've gone a long while with no notifications at all and want to verify they work, check iPhone → Settings → Notifications → WatchieBesti and confirm that notifications are allowed.

# My pet's mood isn't changing

Your pet updates based on activity data from HealthKit. Here's everywhere to check.

## Check the app's built-in diagnostics screen

WatchieBesti has a status screen that tells you directly what it can and can't see. To find it: open the app to your pet's main screen, swipe down, scroll down to **Settings**, then keep scrolling to this section.

Settings → status

**Steps & heart rate** should read **Active** and **iCloud** should read **Connected**. If either one shows anything else, that's the specific thing to fix — go through the permission checks below, or restart your watch if iCloud is stuck.

## Check Health permission on your watch

Permissions can be reviewed and updated on your Apple Watch or your iPhone.

## Give it time

Giving a child an Apple Watch sounds straightforward. Pair it. Hand it over. Done.

Except it is not that simple. Not if the child does not have their own iPhone. And not if you want control over what they can do with it.

Apple Family Setup solves both problems. But the process has a few steps most parents miss the first time. Here is the real walkthrough.

## What Family Setup actually does

You manage everything from your own phone. The watch gets its own phone number (if cellular), its own Apple ID, and its own set of parental controls.

The child can make calls, send messages, use apps, and track activity. They cannot browse the web freely, install anything without approval, or access features you have not enabled.

## What you need before starting

- An Apple Watch Series 6 or later (GPS + Cellular) running watchOS 11 or later — WatchieBesti's minimum. Cellular is required for Family Setup.
- Your own iPhone 6s or later running the latest iOS.
- Both devices connected to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
- The child's Apple ID. If they do not have one, you create it during setup.
- About 15 minutes of uninterrupted time.

Tap "All Watches" in the top left. Then tap "Add Watch". Choose "Set Up for a Family Member". This is the crucial step. If you tap "Set Up for Myself", the watch expects an iPhone pairing for the wearer. That is not what you want.

Hold your iPhone over the animation on the watch screen. Wait for the pairing confirmation. If it fails (it happens), restart both devices and try again. The pairing animation needs clear line of sight between the phone camera and the watch screen.

If your child is under 13, you can create an Apple ID for them during setup. You will need to verify your own identity as the parent/guardian. Apple uses this for Family Sharing and purchase approvals. The child's account is automatically added to your Family Sharing group.

The watch requires a passcode. Choose something the child will remember. A 4-digit code is fine for younger kids. You can change it later from your iPhone.

This is where most parents stop. Do not stop here.

Set the schedule by tapping "Schooltime" during setup and choosing start/end times. You can also enable it manually from the watch control centre.

Screen Time limits are set from your iPhone under Settings (Apple Watch screen time settings). Block apps during certain hours. Limit contacts to approved numbers only. Set content restrictions for music, podcasts, and app installation.

## What most parents get wrong

- **Skipping Schooltime setup.** The watch buzzes during class. The child gets in trouble. You get a call from the teacher. Set Schooltime during initial setup.
- **Not reviewing contacts.** By default, the child can call and message anyone in your iCloud contacts if you do not restrict it. Go to Screen Time in your iPhone settings and set "Allowed Contacts Only".
- **Forgetting to install apps.** Family Setup installs very little by default. The child's watch will look bare. Install a few useful apps (fitness, weather, a fun watch face app) before handing it over.
- **Assuming cellular means internet.** Cellular on Family Setup is for calls, messages, and app data. It is not a full mobile browser. Web content is blocked by default and that is a feature.

## The problem with counting

Behavioural research across dozens of studies shows a consistent pattern. External rewards (badges, numbers, streaks) work for 2-8 weeks. Then motivation drops to baseline. Sometimes below baseline, because the activity now feels like a chore without the reward.

This is called the overjustification effect. When you do something for an external reason, your brain stops generating internal motivation for it. The activity becomes transactional. Steps for a number. Movement for a badge.

A child's Apple Watch knows a lot. Heart rate. Step count. Sleep schedule. Active energy. Workout history. This is sensitive biometric data. Where it goes matters.

## The Privacy Nutrition Label: how to read it

Every app on the App Store has a privacy label. Scroll to "App Privacy" on the product page. It shows three categories:

- **Data Used to Track You**: data linked across apps and websites to build an advertising profile. These data types leave your device and are shared with third parties.
- **Data Linked to You**: data that identifies you (name, email, account ID) and is collected by the developer. It leaves your device but stays with the app maker.
- **Data Not Linked to You**: data collected anonymously. It leaves your device but cannot be tied to a specific person.

For a child's app, you want all three categories to be as empty as possible. Ideally: no tracking data. No linked data. Minimal unlinked data (or none).

## Apple HealthKit: what apps actually access

A well-behaved app reads only what it needs. It never writes health data (prevents contamination of your Health records). It processes everything on-device without sending raw health data to a server.

When an app first opens, you see a permission prompt listing every data type it wants to access. Read these carefully. Deny anything that seems unnecessary.

## What the major kids Apple Watch pet apps collect

We examined the App Store privacy labels and privacy policies for the most popular Apple Watch pet and fitness apps marketed to children (checked June 2026). Here is what we found:

**StepDog**: reads steps from HealthKit. Syncs to a cloud backend (Microsoft Azure). Privacy label shows Identifiers and Usage Data collected and linked to identity. Health data leaves the device.

**PetPock**: reads steps via HealthKit widget. Uses cloud infrastructure for pet data. Privacy label shows identifiers collected.

**Habbie**: reads 12+ HealthKit types. Keeps health data on-device (good). But collects User ID, Product Interaction, Crash Data, and Performance Data for analytics. Privacy label shows identifiers and usage data collected (not linked to identity).

**Belly**: reads steps only. Uses optional Apple Sign-in for cloud backup. Privacy label is minimal but steps data is sent to servers.

## Three questions to ask before installing any kids app

1. **Does this app need an account?** If yes, what data is tied to that account? Kids should not have app accounts tied to email addresses unless absolutely necessary.
2. **Where does the health data go?** On-device only is best. Encrypted iCloud sync tied to the child's Apple ID is acceptable. Third-party cloud servers are a red flag for children's biometric data.
3. **Does the app have social features?** Chat, friend codes, leaderboards, and profile sharing mean your child's activity data and pet status could be visible to strangers. Apps with zero social features are preferable for younger children.

It is whether they are required to progress, play a game, or keep your pet happy. Coin packs that gate content are the problem. Optional cosmetics you can also earn for free through normal play are a different story.
2. **Whether Family Sharing is supported.** It is listed under "Supports" on the App Store page. Apps without Family Sharing mean every family member pays separately.
3. **The subscription terms.** Auto-renewing subscriptions are the default. They continue until you manually cancel. Many parents forget. Apple's subscription management (Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions) shows everything active.

## The 30-second audit

Open your iPhone Settings. Tap your Apple ID. Tap Subscriptions. Add up the monthly total for your family's apps. Multiply by 12 for the annual cost. Multiply by the number of years you expect to use them.

That number is almost certainly larger than you think. One-time purchase apps that cover the whole family are outliers. When you find one that does what you need, it is worth switching.
