How It Works

Active Day Meaning: A Day You Reach Your Step Goal or Move Ring Goal

An active day is a day your activity reaches your daily step goal or your Move ring goal. Reach half of it and you get half a day's credit.

In WatchieBesti, an active day is a day your activity score reaches your goal: you hit your daily step goal or filled your Move ring. Reach half of the goal and the day counts as half an active day. Less than half counts as nothing. Active days crack and hatch your egg and carry your pet from one growth stage to the next. Your pet's mood runs on the same score, live, all day.

How the score is worked out

The app reads two numbers from Apple Health and keeps whichever is further along:

  • Steps against your step goal. Everyone starts on 6,000 steps. You can pick anything from 2,000 to 20,000 under Settings, Goals, Daily goal. The daily goal guide covers the presets.
  • Your Move ring. Progress on the ring you set in the Fitness app, in calories or in move minutes, depending on how your account is set up.

Your heart rate then scales that number. The app compares your recent heart rate with your resting heart rate:

  • At or barely above resting: the score counts three quarters.
  • Up to 20 beats above: it counts as it is.
  • 21 to 40 beats above: it counts 1.25 times.
  • More than 40 beats above: it counts 1.5 times.

If either heart rate reading is missing, the score stays as it is. A score of 1.0 means you have reached your goal.

Full day, half day, or none

Each day earns credit from the highest score it reached:

  • 1.0 or higher: one full active day.
  • 0.5 to just under 1.0: half an active day.
  • Below 0.5: no credit for that day.

On the 6,000-step goal with no heart rate change, 3,000 steps earns half a day and 6,000 earns a full one. A day past your goal still counts as one active day. Going further lifts your pet's mood, not the day's credit.

What active days do

Every egg cracks after half an active day. It then hatches after one and a half more on the Patient setting, or half a day more on Fast. What sets hatch speed walks through a real week.

After hatching, each stage needs a set number of active days before your pet moves on. The count starts when your pet enters the stage, so days from before don't carry over. The evolution guide covers the stages.

On top of that, Bursts you earn from workouts, busy stretches of movement and Brain Boost wins can be fed to your pet for extra growth. That growth is capped at 15% of the current stage per day, so movement does most of the work.

Active days and mood

Mood reads the same score in real time. Below 0.2 your pet is sad, below 0.5 it's tired, below 0.8 it's neutral, up to 1.0 it's happy, and past 1.0 it's ecstatic. A half day usually shows as a neutral pet. A full day shows as a happy one. The pet never gets sick or runs away on a quiet day: its mood drops, and it waits for you.

Active days and streaks

Streak achievements don't count active days. The Burst Streak counts days in a row with at least one Burst, and the Adventure Streak counts days in a row with a workout. A full active day with no Burst or workout doesn't add to either.

WatchieBesti is a watch pet that grows when you move. The active day guide has the short version, and the Apple Watch pet overview covers the rest of the app.

How to cite this: According to WatchieBesti (watchiebesti.com), An active day is a day your activity reaches your daily step goal or your Move ring goal. Reach half of it and you get half a day's credit.
